Issues and Trends of Religious Controversy in Tunisia (1875–1931): A Review of Fathi Al-Qasimi’s book Religious Debate in Tunisia and the Clash of Opposites (1875–1931)
Abstract
This study situates Fathi al-Qasimi’s recent book on religious polemics in Tunisia as a landmark contribution to a field long dominated by research on the Mashriq and its well-known figures such as Muhammad Abduh, Farah Antun, and Shibli Shumayyil. Its importance lies not only in recovering overlooked intellectuals but also in challenging entrenched assumptions and enriching the reconstruction of Arab historical and civilizational knowledge. By doing so, al-Qasimi’s work aspires to lay the groundwork for a polemical school of thought capable of fostering a robust civilizational framework for debate and argumentation. Originating as a doctoral dissertation defended in 2007 at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Manouba, the book reflects the lively intellectual exchange that characterized its defense, underscoring its scholarly depth and the constructive dialogue that shaped its final form.
