Faith and Knowledge Between Kant and Hegel: Critical Antagonism and Dialectical Synthesis
Abstract
This study examines the early Hegelian critique of Kant’s philosophy, focusing on the tensions within Kant’s system between the different faculties of reason and the attempt in the Critique of Judgment to legitimize their harmony in both theoretical and practical domains. Within this framework, the problem of faith and knowledge arises from Kant’s strict separation between belief and knowledge, a division that Hegel confronted in his early works—The Difference between Fichte’s System and Schelling’s System (1801) and Faith and Knowledge (1802)—as he sought to restore the speculative unity of philosophy against its fragmentation. Employing analysis and comparison of Kant’s and Hegel’s texts, the research highlights how Hegel’s youthful writings reveal a consistently critical stance toward Kant, particularly on the issue of faith and knowledge, where Hegel aimed to transcend Kant’s conceptual divisions by reasserting the contemplative unity of reason and overcoming the duality of belief and knowledge through the central Hegelian notion of Aufhebung (transcendence).
