Abstract

Identity is based on relationships of ideas, and these relationships create identity through the easy transition they make. However, since relationships and ease of transition may diminish in degrees that are difficult to sense, it is difficult to have a correct criterion to settle any discussion of time when the right to the name of identity is acquired or lost. And when this is so, and all the
precise and accurate questions of personal identity can never be decided, it is necessary - for this reason - to regard them as grammatical difficulties, not philosophical. All discussions of the identity of unbroken connected things are merely verbal discussions, except for the principle of an imaginary or illusory union to which the relation between the parts leads.
