Natural Logic and the Formalization of Pragmatic Phenomena according to Lykoff
Abstract
This study examines Lykoff's concept of natural logic as a formal framework for distinguishing grammatical from ungrammatical expressions and connecting the logical structure of language to its surface form. Beyond its role in analyzing syntax and semantics, natural logic serves as a versatile empirical tool for formalizing pragmatic aspects of language, such as context, speaker intention, and situational factors in performative and imperative sentences. The research is structured into two main sections: one addressing the logical forms of performative acts, and the other analyzing implication through a critical lens. Ultimately, it aims to demonstrate that pragmatic phenomena can be studied with logical rigor equal to, or even surpassing, that of semantic analysis, thanks to natural logic’s adaptability to diverse grammatical rules and contemporary logical methodologies.
