Abstract
This study explores Ibn Rushd’s engagement with Plato’s Republic, not merely as a summary but as a philosophical framework applied to the political realities of his Islamic society. In his work The Necessary in Politics, Ibn Rushd incorporated key Platonic concepts, adapting them to reflect the governance structures and reform needs of his time, and envisioning philosophers—endowed with true wisdom—as ideal leaders. Yet, the sociopolitical climate in the Islamic world often marginalized such thinkers, pushing them toward isolation. To unpack this dynamic, the study is divided into two parts: the first examines the central themes of Plato’s Virtuous Republic that inspired Ibn Rushd’s return to it, while the second investigates how he used these ideas to critique and reimagine political systems in Islamic regions, especially in Andalusia.
