Abstract
The study seeks to outline the key methodological trends that emerged in the early Maliki school, exploring the factors behind their development, their methodological preferences, and the ways in which these trends interacted and competed for prominence. It also examines the hostility and partisanship that surrounded this competition, drawing upon a variety of historical sources related to the Maliki school. One primary source highlighted is an early and significant text that vividly reflects this diversity: The Naming and Stories of Malik’s Peers, His Companions, and the Companions of His Companions, authored by Andalusian jurist and historian Abu Al-Abbas Al-Walid Ibn Bakr Al-Saraqusti Al-Ghamri (d. 392 AH). This research carries significant importance on several levels—documenting Maliki studies, interpreting its issues and subsequent phenomena, and critically analyzing associated concepts. It also delves into the richness and diversity of the school, emphasizing its potential to address contemporary legislative matters. The findings identify the foundational roots of the Iraqi and Moroccan branches of the Maliki school and clarify that the development of the school concept occurred earlier than generally believed. Furthermore, the research opens up new and pressing avenues for future studies.
