Book Review: Liquid Modernity

Abstract

This is a review of the book "Liquid Modernity" by Zygmunt Baumann, translated by Hajjaj Abu Jabr, and published by the Arab Network for Research. The first edition was published in 2016 in 304 pages. It is a book that seeks to understand the changing times and the shock that resulted from the transition from a distinct state of human life to another, to liquid modernity, and the changes it caused in human lives. It also dealt with the stories of transition, gradual and continuous expansion of the distance that separates the current life circumstance from its starting point, and a human situation that becomes different from our reality. It discussed rigidity and fluidity: solid modernity, the obsessive-compulsive disorder of modernity, progress and nothing else, dissolution, the permanent feature of modernity, deferment, obscurity and contradiction, the state and the nation in a time of rigidity, the separation of the individual from the group, and the characteristic of modern life; solidity: Joshua's speech; and the solid modernity: the world of health ... etc.
