Musnad al-Shāfiʿī
Abstract
Musnad al-Shāfiʿī is a collection of hadith associated historically with the Hadith scholar Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Aṣamm al-Nisapuri (d. Nishapur, 346/957). It might apparently be composed of Hadiths whcih were collected by his students from what al-Aṣamm had heard from al-Rabīʿ ibn Sulaymān al-Murādī (d. 270/884) in his youth. Al-Musnad contains around %40 of the hadiths in al-Shāfiʿī’s Al-Umm (d. 204/820). Comparisons between Al-Musnad and Al-Umm can tell us something about the state of Al-Umm as dictated by al-Rabīʿ near the end of his life. It also shows that both Books are identical with minor differences in terms of organization and arrangement. Regarding the chain of transmission, we find some minor differences in terms of wording. However, the order of the hadiths within Al-Musnad is completely consistent with their order in Al-Umm, which confirms that Al-Umm in its state today is close to the state it was in during the days of al-Rabīʿ.
