Review of the book “Studies on the composing of the Meccan surahs”
Abstract
This article is a review of the book "Studies on the Systems of the Meccan Suras" by Angelica Neuwirth. This book is the start of Angelica Neuwirth's studies on the Holy Qur'an. It is a doctoral dissertation that the researcher defended at the University of Göttingen in 1972. It was originally written in German and has not been translated into any other language so far, with the exception of some summaries the researcher published in English in the Encyclopedia of the Qur’an. Since its publication, the book has only been reprinted twice. The first edition was published in 1981, and the second in 2007. The researcher reveals tremendous energy and ability in analysis, using a structural and historical literary approach. The first is concerned with analyzing the Meccan surah systems, while the second takes into account their historical development.
