The Logical Influence of Ibn Sina on Ibn Tamlus of Andalusia
Abstract
This research attempts to uncover the influence of Ibn Sina (died in 427 AH) on the Andalusian logical heritage, and specifically on Abu Al-Hajjaj Ibn Tamlus (died in 620 AH), who we assume that Sheikh Ibn Sina has contributed to his logical thought in his book, Al-Mukhtasar fi al-Mantiq (A Summary of Logic). The truth is that the studies and research that were interested in investigating the impact of Ibn Sina in Andalusia were more concerned with his influence on medicine than on other sciences for which he was known. Therefore, this study seeks to go beyond this matter and move towards researching his logical influence, especially on the philosophers of Andalusia who he influenced in the issues in which the author of logic followed Aristotle, just as they criticized him in those in which he disagreed with him. This is the approach that we will also see in the most prominent late Andalusian logicians, I mean Ibn Tamlus. This research was divided into two axes: the first was devoted to explaining Ibn Sina’s influence on the Andalusian logicians. The second was devoted to monitoring his logical influence on Ibn Tamlus. To approach this topic, the historical analytical comparative method was applied. The research concluded that Ibn Sina had an influence on the Andalusian logicians and Ibn Tamlus in particular, through interaction with his opinions, sometimes with approval and other times with criticism.
