Taha Abd Arrahman's vision of the modernist readings of the Holy Qur'an A critical reading of the reference and methodological foundations
Abstract
The study aimed to review the contemporary readings of the Holy Qur’an, by criticizing their reference and methodology foundations, and to present theoretical and knowledge foundations for any contemporary reading to start, taking into consideration that this reading should remain within the Islamic thought, and not beyond that. Western modernity applied its mechanisms to the Torah and the Bible, which made them transmit to Islamic pragmatic field, without considering disparities between the two cultures, especially religious texts. The study also aimed to reveal the dimensions of the application of modernist mechanisms to the Holy Qur’an, as well as to highlight the consequences of that imitation. It finally demonstrated the opinion of Taha Abd Arrahman in this issue, by using the analytical-critical approach. The study concluded that the reading that Taha established is related to the interpretive and cultural heritage and the requirements of the Islamic pragmatic field, while the imitative modernist readings separated from these requirements and tended to imitate Western modernity, which is completely different from the Islamic context. .
