The terminology of interpretation in Ibn Hazm's Ihkaam: concept, attributes, characteristics and issues
Abstract
By tracking the terminology of interpretation in the book of Ihkaam as well as by extrapolating it fully, this study has shown that Ibn Hazm does not reject interpretation which is valid and based on clear evidence. On the other hand, he strongly rejected any interpretation which is baseless and unsubstantiated. The study concluded that the terminology of interpretation is a central concept in the texts under study, on the basis of which the apparent thought can either be established negatively or positively. This research does not only open horizons for showing the difference of the terminology in “Usul al Fiqh” between Ibn Hazm and other scholars, but also opens horizons for showing the different terminology among scholars of Usul al Fiqh and its effect on fiqh and sectarianism differences. This also provides viability to investigate a number of aspects of conflict and controversy that arose from differences as well as the possibility of unifying Usul al Fiqh terminology.
